Presented by Garry Dart, Afomia Gebre, Alex Hosein, Lauren Hutton, Tom McFarlane, Greg Richard, Alisha Shivji, and Kyle Wilby.
Accredited by Dalhousie Continued Pharmacy Education (Dal CPE) - see below for details.
Fostering an environment of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) for patients and colleagues is essential to any practice setting. We can all do our part in creating inclusive spaces in which each individual is respected, valued, and cared for. It is commonly known that health disparities exist, but how do we go about creating change to improve care? What are important considerations for 2SLGBTQIA+ persons that we can integrate into our everyday practice? What kind of language can we use to ensure we are respectful to all?
The workshop took place on June 1 from 11:00 – 16:30 EDT.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Foster an environment of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) for patients and colleagues within their practice setting
- Discuss historical and current sources of systemic oppression in order to recognize their presence in their professional ecosystem
- Utilize respectful language that reflects IDEA principles
- Monitor for and educate patients on dermatologic toxicity from oncology drugs for persons with varying degrees of skin pigmentation
- Integrate important considerations for LGBTQIA2S+ persons into everyday practice
Examples include: tissue-based cancer screening, long-term complications of hormone therapies (including cancer risk), navigating drug interactions between anticancer therapies and complex medications commonly prescribed in LGBTQIA2S+ populations.
