Oncology Fundamentals Day for Technicians 2019 Speaker Biographies

Kara Browne, Senior Oncology Pharmacy Technician, Saskatoon Cancer Centre, Saskatoon, SK

Kara received a Pharmacy Technician Certificate from Red Deer College in 1996 and started her career at Royal University Hospital inpatient pharmacy in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan the same year.  She then moved to Calgary, Alberta where she worked for 11 years at the Peter Lougheed Centre and later the Alberta Children’s Hospital, where she worked in the dedicated oncology satellite pharmacy.  Kara joined the oncology pharmacy at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre in 2009 and moved into a Senior Oncology Pharmacy Technician position in 2014. She is a Licensed Pharmacy Technician with the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy Professionals.  

Andrea Hawrysh, Genetic Counsellor, Division of Medical Genetics at Royal University Hospital, Saskatchewan Health Authority, Saskatoon, SK

Andrea Hawrysh is a board certified Genetic Counsellor and employed with the Saskatchewan Health Authority in the Division of Medical Genetics at Royal University Hospital since 2017. Since obtaining her MSc in Genetic Counselling from McGill University in 2010 she has been employed as a genetic counsellor in Ontario and Saskatchewan and has developed a clinical focus in hereditary cancer syndromes.   

Chris Jensen, Regulated Pharmacy Technician, BC Cancer, Vancouver, BC

Chris Jensen graduated from Vancouver Community College’s Pharmacy Technician program in 2009 and became a Regulated Pharmacy Technician in 2015. He has worked at BC Cancer since 2009 at both the Fraser Valley Centre and the Vancouver Centre. Chris has been in the Drug Access Navigator role in Vancouver since early 2016 and has worked passionately with Medical Oncologists, patients, pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies to improve patient care and access to unfunded medications in British Columbia. 

Eric Kastango, President/CEO, Clinical IQ LLC & Critical Point LLC, Madison, New Jersey

Eric S. Kastango, M.B.A., B.S.Pharm., FASHP, is president of Clinical IQ LLC, a health care consulting firm and CriticalPoint, LLC, a web-based education company. 

Mr. Kastango received his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences and his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix. He completed 65 hours of training in nuclear pharmacy at Purdue University and 80 hours of didactic training for the Six Sigma-Green Belt certification that he started with BD Medical Systems.  Eric was admitted to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Master of Public Health Program, in January 2018.

Since 1980, he has practiced pharmacy in a number of practice settings, including hospitals, community, and home care, in a number of different of roles, including the Corporate Vice President of Pharmacy Services for Coram Healthcare Corporation. He has also managed a FDA-registered cGMP manufacturing operation for Baxter Healthcare Corporation.He is an active member and Fellow of the American Society of Healthcare Pharmacists and served on the USP Sterile Compounding Committee from 2005-2010 and 2010-2015 USP Council of Experts, Compounding Expert Committee until April 2013. In May 2013, USP recognized Eric and the members of Compounding Expert Committee with an Award for Outstanding Contribution to the USP Standards-Setting Process. Eric received a coveted ISMP Cheers Award in 2015 for his work related to sterile compounding safety.  He has served on the USP Hazardous Drug Expert Panel since 2010. He is actively working with NABP and state boards of pharmacy to provide training to their sterile compounding inspectors.  Eric served on the Expert Panel for ASHP Research & Education Foundation in the development of the 2015 Outsourcing Sterile Products Preparation Vendor Assessment Tool and ASHP’s Insourcing Readiness Assessment Tool.

Colleen Olson, Senior Pharmacist, Saskatoon Cancer Centre, Saskatoon, SK

Colleen graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.

In the past she has practiced in both community and hospital pharmacy. Colleen has been at the cancer centre for the past 14 years. She is currently a Senior Pharmacist where she is primarily involved in clinical trials and drug access programs. Colleen also teaches undergraduate classes at the University of Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy in the area of oncology.  

On a personal level, she enjoys spending her free time at her cabin at Emma Lake.
