Mario De Lemos - FCAPhO Recipient 2019

My first experience in oncology pharmacy began in 1990-1993. After a detour into acute care general medicine, I returned to oncology which has been the focus of my practice over the past 20 years. I first joined CAPhO in 2000 and I co-chaired the National Oncology Pharmacy Symposium (NOPS) in 2004 and 2005. To my knowledge, NOPS 2004 was the first CAPhO annual conference in its current format – a stand-alone event with poster submissions, rotating sites from coast to coast to coast, and with organizing committee members drawn from oncology pharmacy practitioners from most regions of the country. I am proud to have helped create this format which has proved to be highly successful, both as an conference event as well as a recruitment opportunity for CAPhO membership. Other CAPhO related activities that I have contributed include podium and poster presentations at the CAPhO conference on numerous occasions on a range of topics, and participation as a mentor for the CAPhO research network.

Within my practice portfolio at BC Cancer, I have developed the revision methodology of the BC Cancer Drug Manual and I coordinate the development and maintenance of the BC chemotherapy therapy protocols. Both resources are widely used nationally and beyond by oncology practitioners of different disciplines, with regular request for permission to use and translation. My work has also led me to academic involvement which includes regular oncology lectures at the University of British Columbia for the undergraduate pharmacy and post-graduate PharmD students, as well as preceptorship for pharmacy residents and students from the University of British Columbia and other institutions.

I have published nearly fifty oncology publications, including thirty MEDLINE-indexed, peer reviewed journal articles. Nine oncology pharmacy projects that I led over the past 20 years have won the national awards of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) in five different categories, with several of them supported by research grants from CSHP and other agencies. In addition to presentations at patient support and advocacy groups, including the Canadian Cancer Society, I have also given podium and poster presentations at international, national, and regional oncology conferences.

I was a member of the inaugural pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review (pCODR) expert review committee (pERC) in 2011-2015. Since 2007, I have been a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the Oncology Pharmacy Practice (JOPP). In addition to be reviewing submissions to JOPP, I was invited as a reviewer by various journals including Cancer, British Journal of Cancer, Drug Safety, and Lancet Oncology, as well as the CSHP national awards committee, Cancer Research UK, Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy, Canadian Cancer Society’s Canadian Cancer Encyclopedia, and the Canadian Pharmacist Association Editorial Advisory Committee. I was a member of the education committee of the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP) member and I am a current member of the ISOPP biosimilar task force.
