The NOPS Conference
The National Oncology Pharmacy Symposium (NOPS) conference is all about information, networking, entertainment and fun.
The three-day program is an ensemble of satellite symposium, plenary sessions, breakout sessions, meals, networking breaks, and entertainment. The Association also holds it Annual General Meeting in conjunction with the conference.
As an example of the breadth and depth of topics explored, here is an excerpt from the 2009 Welcome Letter written by the NOPS Co-Chairs.
The practice of oncology pharmacy has evolved considerably during the last three decades, both clinically and technically. The introduction of the Biological Safety Cabinets in the 80s marked a significant step in the safe handling and preparation of cytotoxic products. More recently, closed systems have offered an additional layer of protection for personnel involved in the preparation, administration, or disposal of cytotoxic drugs. The availability of cytotoxics and targeted therapy in the oral formulation represents a definitive value in terms of patient convenience, but it also comes with new challenges for the oncology pharmacists. Drug interactions in oncology pharmacy have become a reality of every day. The importance of medication reconciliation, to obtain the best possible medication history at any given points during the journey of the oncology patients, is now emerging. Technician regulation is another step that will enable us to enhance safety in oncology. These different aspects of oncology safety, with many other therapeutic topics, will be presented during the next days.
